1st meeting of Interim Board

The first meeting of the interim board will be on Monday 26th November at 5 pm. It was impossible to get everyone there, but we have managed to get most people at short notice and there will be an online discussion prior to the meeting.

If you are not on the Board (and if you are!) please use this blog to raise any issues.

A report of the meeting will be posted on the SED site.

We did it. . . Well done all of us.

Well, I'm home, fed and watered but wanted to express my genuine thanks to everyone who worked so hard to bring Social Enterprise Durham to fruition today.
  • Dave Smith with the Regional Enterprise Framework - a plan which plays to the strengths and approach of Social Enterprise.
  • Hilary Armstrong MP who encouraged us to make Durham a Beacon for Social Enterprise on a National Scale.
  • Neil Davies who took us to a place most conference speakers daren't go.
  • Doug Chapman for showing the scale and ambition of Social Enterprise as demonstrated in the bricks and eco mortar of The Greenhouse
  • Shaun Stuart, Mike Berriman, the DRCC and others for keeping the flames of SED alive.
  • Graham Grant who did immense work behind the scenes to facilitate today.
  • Daniel Heery for taking time to visit and encourage us in his role as Social Enterprise Ambassador
  • Everyone who put themselves forward for the Board, and of course the 50+ who attended.

Now the work begins . . .

If you want to add your comments on the day please click the link below this message.

Social Ambassador to attend on Thursday

We are pleased to announce that Daniel Heery, one of the new government appointed Social Ambassadors, is coming along on Thursday.

Daniel runs "Cybermoor" in Alston and has just launched "Business with Altitude". With puns like that, he sounds like our kind of guy!

Daniel is busy organising a social enterprise event for this Saturday, so will not be able to spend the whole day with us. However, he will be there for networking at lunchtime and we might persuade him to say a few words.

We are nearly at full capacity, so please make sure you have booked.

Legal Advice on Draft Share Prospectus

Below is the legal advice we have received concerning the draft Share Prospectus for Social Enterprise Durham:

"I have reviewed the draft prospectus and confirm that this does not flag up any issues of concern.

Obviously, the principle as to whether the company is limited by guarantee or share will need to be discussed, but this is not dependent upon the applicable legislation.

One issue which may require discussion is the directors remuneration point identified in the prospectus - as you are aware, any distribution of CIC assets to a member is subject to restrictions and this would apply equally to any director who is also a member acting in their capacity as a director.
However, this is unlikely to be a problem in practice given the proposed membership structure/criteria

Darlington

I have been in touch with Darlington Council who inform me there is currently no specific provision for Social Enterprise there - other than the traditional Startup support.

Hopefully one of the Darlington officers will be able to attend on the 15th to gain an understanding of what SED can provide and achieve.

Thereafter it may be worth progressing an idea to include Darlington Social Enterprises within SED.

Maybe we can discuss this briefly on the day? Unless anyone has any comments now . .

Social Enterprise Day in Durham - 15th November 2007

We are hosting an event on Social Enterprise Day (15th November) at the Greenhouse. The object of the day, as well as celebrating social enterprise day, is to launch Social Enterprise Durham after its long gestation.

Sponsored by One North East and Be Enterprising, the event will bring together social enterprises from across Durham with other folks with an interest in promoting the development of the sector.

Hilary Armstrong MP will give the keynote speech. We are looking forward to a great event, swiftly followed by the formation of the new organisation and a burst of social enterprise activity shortly thereafter.
